  • How to professionally present materials to real clients. 
  • An understanding of Adobe Creative Suite for photo editing, layout design, and video editing and effects.

Experiential Learning

How you'll gain skills

  • Test and apply course concepts through current software in our computer labs
  • Participate in national and international awards competitions.
  • Work with real clients in The Agency, Mohawk’s student-run advertising agency.
  • Participate in a seven-week field placement.

Field Placement

A field placement is intended to give students hands-on experience in the workplace. After successful completion of all required courses, students complete a mandatory 245-hour placement in their final semester. The successful completion of the field placement is required for graduation. Please visit the Centre for Experiential Learning for more information on the field placement for this program.

The Agency is an experiential learning facility operating within the McKeil School of Business at Mohawk College. Students from a variety of programs including Advertising, Public Relations, Marketing, Graphics and Broadcast Media collaborate in developing real world marketing and communications solutions for selected non-profit organizations and start-up companies in the greater Hamilton area.

All projects with our client/partners are integrated into the curriculum and students are marked on what they do. They work under close faculty supervision as they develop effective marketing communications solutions relevant to meeting clear client objectives.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.

In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field. To ensure the outcomes remain current and in line with industry needs, we invite our employers, graduates working in the field and current students to re-examine and update them during regular, ongoing program review focus groups.

Additional Information

Do I need a laptop for classes?
Not really, but that would be personal preference. The College is wireless, and has many open access computer labs and areas. However many students like to use laptops or tablets to take notes or access eLearn. Some instructors will have specific rules or guidelines on laptop use in class.

Mac or PC? 
In the Advertising and Marketing Communications Management program, we use both. Our primary computer labs are equipped with Macs, but they are dual platform: they run platforms for Apple and Windows. In the first semester of our program, we are pretty much focused on the Windows platform. We move into Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator in the second semester. Students that select to focus on Creative stream as of Year Two often prefer the Apple hardware.

I'm choosing Creative stream in my second year... Mac or PC?
Again, it's personal preference. A few years ago, the challenge with Apple products is that they were very specialized to creative business focus. Now, Apple products have penetrated the home market. You are more likely than not to be using iPods, iPads and other Apple products in your home. Buy what you prefer. Many of our creative students WILL invest in a Macbook product as it is portable, can be used in class and between classes. Students with regular personal access to the creative software programs tend to excel faster because of ease-of-use and frequency of use.

There doesn't seem to be a posted cost for textbooks in this program; how come? 
Textbook needs in our program are quite low. Some of our service courses (courses in our Program of Studies, but offered across many programs) might require textbooks. Marketing 1 is an example of this. However there are only a couple of textbooks required in our program in our core courses. One textbook for Account Management is used across three years and is readily available "used".

Do I get a degree in this program?
We are an advanced diploma program.

Do you have articulation agreements? Can I work towards a degree? 
Yes, we have a strong articulation agreement with Griffith University in Australia where you can earn a degree in just over a year. Other agreements are posted on the Mohawk College website, under Articulations. Credits towards degrees vary from university to university. Domestic (Canadian) universities tend to offer fewer credits towards their degrees than International universities do.

I've come from another college/university... can I get advanced standing?
Depends on where you are coming from. If you have been in an Advertising program at another college, you will probably receive significant credits but might need to complete credits in our first year still. Your transcripts are evaluated on a case-by-case, or course-by-course basis by the Program Coordinator when you apply.

Is there a fast-track option? I don't want to stay for the full three years... how about an early-exit option? 
At present there are no fast-track or early-exit options in our program. You are here for three years. At present there is only one intake...September.

On March 1st, 2016, I became an official employee of Bensimon Byrne. In that time, I've worked on a bit of everything. I mounted some things for the Liberal campaign, I created a logo for Mattamy Homes, I helped create some pitch decks for different clients, did some work on Scotiabank, and got to learn a lot about the kind of teamwork and effort that goes into getting all these things out, winning awards and new clients. Although I work a lot with InDesign and Illustrator, a big part of my work is also Powerpoint. I know it's not the most glamorous of programs, and at first I didn't think it would be something I ever did outside of school, but it wound up being a big asset for me. I'm one of few people in the Bensimon Byrne studio who work with it and who know its ins and outs, which means that I get a variety of clients to work on. As far as Mohawk goes, I credit the faculty and my classmates with a lot of my growth and development in this industry. They all fostered a great environment and I was happy to go to school early or stay late because of them. Though it wasn't always smiles and laughs, I really learned (and continue to learn) so much from the people I met through this program.

I started as an intern at Mindshape Creative Brand Marketing agency located in Oakville. The agency was rather small with approximately 12 people- therefore; it was an all hands on deck kind of situation. This is how you learn how to manage a client and exceed their expectations at a fast pace. I learned more from this small agency then I would in the big city by digging deep into brainstorm session right to final execution. After my internship was over I was offered a full time gig as an account coordinator. Over a year and half later I now have my own clients, as well as have the opportunity to work on some of our other great clients such as Ford, Mother Parkers, Kruger Products, Credit Union Central of Canada, CGC and more. Since I began working for Mindshape, we have grown immensely. We now employ more than 25 people and have ever-growing client relationships. So if you are looking for a big job in perhaps a little city - it's possible. The professors at Mohawk will be sure to help you find a job that is a right fit for you-they did for me!

Our professors were great because they offered new challenges every single day, but they also supported us however they could. We didn't have to send an email and wait a week to get a response. Instead, we could just walk into their office and have a chat. Because of Mohawk I got to travel to Boulder, Colorado (look it up, it's not a huge town) to internship at Crispin Porter + Bogusky. At the time, they were at the very top of the ad agency ladder. Over 4,000 people applied to get in there from all around the world, and somehow, I got accepted. Cool. After learning a lot there and having a great time, I came back to Toronto where I worked for Saatchi + Saatchi, Lowe Roche, TBWA, Juniper Park, and currently DS+P. It has been a crazy time. I think my favourite part about working in advertising is the fact that it really is something different every single day. There are many, many challenges - but that makes it fun.
