Electrical energy is the backbone of the world today and everyone relies on the safe generation, transmission, distribution and protection of this energy. Hydro utilities are in need of skilled technologists that have a strong foundation of modern electrical energy and who can help the industry move forward into the smart energy efficient digital age.
Program Highlights
- Benefit from hands-on learning in the Caroline Street Substation, located in downtown Hamilton.
- Gain access to a real-world application of Energy Systems labs in The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation, the new net zero building at Fennell Campus that is the first of its kind in Ontario.
- Experience applied research in power, solar, wind energy using the state-of-the-art smart grid/microgrid at the Stoney Creek Energy Research Centre.
What you'll learn
- Gain integrated skill sets that will position you well for a variety of employment opportunities tied to various electrical energy systems.
- Study sustainability topics including clean energy sources such as wind, solar/photovoltaic, solar thermal and hybrid electric technologies and strategies for conservation and management of clean energy supported by microgrids and distributed energy systems.
- Experience a unique program introducing a multi-disciplinary approach that focuses on the generation, capture, storage, and distribution of energy and their integration

Domestic and International student admission requirements
OSSD or equivalent (Mohawk Academic Upgrading, GED) including:
- Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
- Grade 12 Mathematics; MAP4C ≥ 80% or MCT4C; or any U or equivalent
Options are available for mature applicants.
Language Requirements for Applicants with English as a Second Language
- See below for accepted equivalents for Grade 12 English:
- Successful completion of the GAS-English for Academic Purposes (478 or 278) program
- TOEFL minimum score of 550 (80 Internet based)
- or IELTS Academic minimum score of 6.0 overall with no band less than 5.5

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English.

How you’ll gain skills
- Hands-on experience in labs that include renewable energy sources: wind, solar and hybrid, with a curriculum that is based on the industry needs as presented by our industry partners.
- Performing applied research using the most up-to-date technologies and equipment in our research centres and newly renovated labs.
- Gain valuable experience during co-op work terms.
- Apply cumulative program knowledge through a capstone research project.
This co-op program has been accredited by CEWIL Canada. This represents the highest standard of achievement for co-op programs in Canada.

Co-op Delivery and Fees
This program has a mandatory co-op, as part of the program of study. The annual co-op fee structure can be found on the Tuition and Fees page.

Driver’s License and Vehicle
Please note that some co-op positions for this program require that students have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle. The license requirement (G class, G2 class) varies by position. Some co-op positions may require students to commute.
Co-op Designation
This program offers four co-op work term opportunities but requires two completed co-op work terms for the co-op designation.
Work Term Capabilities
(which do not reflect individual work experiences & exposures)
Work Term 1
- Design, construction, testing, installation and preventative maintenance of computer and electronic equipment
- Use electronic test instruments such as signal generators, oscilloscopes, voltmeters, ammeters and power supplies
- Installation, troubleshooting and repair of computer hardware & software
- Digital and analogue circuits design and troubleshooting
- Printed circuit board layout and construction
- Technical support, field service, component sourcing and purchasing
- Technical writing
- Small scale construction projects & use of tools
- Computer network design, installation, maintenance and management
Work Term 2
- Microcontroller programming using Assembly language
- Experience with industrial logic and sensors, and 3-phase motor and control
- PLC programming and implementation, Industrial electronics
Work Term 3, 4 & 5
- Computer aided drafting using Autocad/Autocad electrical drawing for electrical and industrial applications
- Fixed speed AC and DC motor control systems analysis, testing and troubleshooting
- Evaluation testing and modification of electrical systems and metering
- Technical writing
- Solar panel (PV) system testing, monitoring and modification
- Small scale wind turbine system testing, monitoring and modification
- Renewable energy potential evaluation using Retscreen software
- Perform energy audits and analysis of residential, small-scale industrial or commercial buildings
- Energy Project Management
- Evaluate the energy use patterns and recommend energy efficient and/or alternative energy solutions

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.
In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field.
