Admission

Students are placed into an EAP Semester (level) by language skill level using standard English language test scores.

  • To avoid delays or disappointment, we strongly encourage students to obtain their EAP placement level early in the decision-making and application process and before arrival in Canada. This will provide a clear timeline to EAP graduation and your next program. Only EAP Department Faculty or Staff can communicate an accurate placement to you. Contact eap@mohawkcollege.ca to learn about testing, to submit official test results, and to receive a placement in the correct level.
  • Students can take a placement test at Mohawk College, or they can provide official test scores.
    • Scores must not be more than one year old.
    • Students may submit no more than two (2) approved English assessments per semester for placement in EAP. The same type of assessment may be submitted only one time. We will use the most recent test scores to determine placement.
    • If a student’s skill scores are very widely distributed or do not include a speaking score, an EAP professor will interview the student to refine placement.
    • We reserve the right to re-test any student whose in-person skills differ significantly from reported test scores.
  • We accept the following tests:
    • IELTS Academic (not a practice test)
    • iTEP Snapshot or Academic
    • TOEFL iBT
    • CLBPT (Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test) or CLB Certificate from a Ministry-approved language school
    • We accept Duolingo; however, students must share their full results (not just their certificate) with Mohawk College and must have an interview with EAP faculty to determine placement.
  • To support their success, students will usually be placed in an EAP semester according to lowest individual skill score, not overall score, using the chart below.

Note: All Mohawk College Diploma or Advanced Diploma programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent for entry. We strongly recommend that EAP students have a secondary school diploma or 10 years of formal education to enter EAP. This will allow them to meet (or more easily acquire) academic requirements for their next program.

Additional Information

Juliano Viudes Moraes

When I arrived in Canada, I was surprised by the barriers of the language. I didn't imagine that people spoke so fast and that it would be very difficult to understand and interact with others. However, when I started to study in EAP, I began to interact with other students from different nationalities, teachers and other staff. The EAP program prepared me for my post-secondary program of Occupational Therapy Assistant and Physical Therapy Assistant as I learned how to write formal, argumentative and persuasive essays and assignments, improved my reading strategies and critical thinking, practiced listening and note-taking techniques, and learned oral presentation skills. I felt more confident during and after each course and I am grateful for having excellent professors and multicultural friends. So, I strongly recommend you to come to Hamilton and study at Mohawk College’s EAP program. It will improve your communication skills, provide you multicultural friendships and also prepare you to be successful in other post-secondary programs.

Gabi with family

EAP is the start of a Canadian career journey for many students. Gabi Sulbaran is an award-winning graduate of the EAP Program who went on to complete her Graduate Certificate at Mohawk College, work in her field, and take on a position as Vice-Chair of our EAP Advisory Committee. She reports, "I feel so happy and blessed with my new job. I got a position as case manager in Ontario Works.... After I completed my postgraduate program in concurrent disorders, I started to work at YWCA in St. Catharines. I was an advocate there. Then after a year, I got the position as Senior Women’s Advocate.... I had the opportunity to empower women. Now I have the opportunity to work in the job that I always dreamed since I came to Canada. It was the job that many people had told me it was something impossible, but I worked on it and I got it."
