FAQ: Online medical and diagnostic imaging programs at Mohawk College

As a leader in medical and diagnostic imaging education, we offer programs that combine the flexibility of online learning with hands-on training. Whether you’re interested in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), sonography or radiography, these programs are designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in diagnostic imaging.

What online diagnostic imaging programs does Mohawk College offer?

Mohawk College offers online diploma, advanced diplomas and graduate certificate programs in several diagnostic imaging disciplines:

How are these programs delivered?

All programs are taught through a blended learning format. The majority of the first two semesters are online, excluding the last few weeks of the second semester. This allows students across Ontario the option to study remotely.

“Our extensive experience in teaching online ensures students can engage effectively, no matter their location” - Laura Thomas, Associate Dean, Medical Imaging

Programs use advanced simulation tools to teach imaging techniques virtually. For example:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

This graduate certificate program uses simulation software that replicates the software of an MRI scanner, allowing students to practice and make mistakes without risk.

Sonography

Students simulate ultrasound exams using an ultrasound probe that pairs with software on their computer.

Radiography

Virtual labs teach students how to position patients and adjust the imaging parameters.

Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography

Similar to Sonography program, students use simulation ultrasound probes on their home computers to practice performing an ultrasound on a patient’s heart.

What is the intensive and why is it required?

All programs include a mandatory intensive, which is an in-person training session held at Mohawk’s Institute for Applied Health Sciences campus in Hamilton, Ontario. Depending on the program, the intensive ranges from one to two weeks. During the intensive, students learn a wide range of hands-on skills. These skills include learning how to operate imaging equipment and safety protocols. The purpose of the intensive is for students to gain the hands-on experience they need to feel confident in clinical settings, preparing them for their clinical placement.

Another function of the intensive is to make connections with your faculty and peers. When you become a diagnostic imaging professional, you also become part of a community. We want you to make the connections you need to have long-term success in your career.

What is a clinical placement and what is its purpose?

Clinical placements are experiential learning opportunities that allow students to apply their skills in real-world healthcare environments. Program faculty coordinate with hospitals, clinics and imaging centres across Canada to create clinical placement opportunities for students. While efforts are made to find a placement near the students’ home, travel or relocation may be required.

Placements are unpaid and provide critical on-the-job training to build expertise and confidence.

What are the career opportunities for graduates?

Graduates can pursue many career paths, including:

  • MRI technologists
  • Radiographer
  • X-ray technologist
  • Sonographer
  • Cardiac sonographer
  • Ultrasound technologist

Can I study anywhere in Ontario?

Yes! All programs are open to students across Ontario. The online delivery model allows you to complete coursework remotely, though you will need to travel to Hamilton for the two-week intensive session.

What makes Mohawk College’s imaging programs unique?

Mohawk College has been a leader in diagnostic imaging education since the 1970s. Over the course of decades, we have built partnerships with hospitals, clinics, and imaging centres across Canada to provide students with placement and future employment opportunities.

With a reputation for cutting-edge technology, we have both the simulation platforms and the modern equipment to ensure our graduates are trained in the latest technology.

Who are these programs suited for?

While anyone can apply to these programs, they are best suited for individuals who intend to work in a medical imaging field like radiography, sonography or MRI. There are many different starting points, such as:

  • High school graduates who are interested in healthcare and technology
  • University students or graduates in related fields like kinesiology or medical sciences
  • Healthcare professionals who are looking to add a second discipline to their skill set

How do I apply?

Visit the program page for application details and program requirements. These competitive programs fill up quickly, so early applications are encouraged!
