Understanding the 2S and LGBTQQIA+ acronym

In celebration of Pride Month, we at Mohawk College believe it is important for everyone to understand what the 2S and LGBTQQIA+ acronym represent. We invite you to act in allyship to queer and trans folks by first familiarizing yourself with the below terms. This small act can make a BIG difference in building a more positive, understanding, and inclusive campus community.

2S and LGBTQQIA+

The following breaks down what each of the letters in 2S and LGBTQQIA+ means:

darkplum colour square

Two Spirit:

a person of Indigenous descent whose individual spirits are a blend of both male and female. This label provides an alternate to the Western labels.

green colour square

Lesbian:

a female-identified person who is attracted to other female-identified persons.

red colour square

Gay:

a male-identified person who is attracted to other male-identified persons.

pink colour square

Bisexual: 

a person who is attracted to their own gender as well as one or more other genders.

teal colour square

Trans, Transgender or Trans Identified:

a person whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.

yellow colour square

Queer:

an umbrella term that some use in place of other LGBTQ+ labels.

orange colour square

Questioning:

a person who is in the process of exploring and discovering their own sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

purple colour square

Intersex:

a person whose sexual anatomy or chromosomes do not fit with the traditional markers of “female” or “male”.

grey colour square

Asexual:

a person who does not feel sexual desire or attraction to any group of people. This person may or may not experience romantic attraction.

blue colour square

Plus Sign:

represents the infinite variety of identities outside of or not represented by the 2S and LGBTQQIA+ acronym.
