Primary duties

Introduction:
We are working closely with an elementary school in Brampton, ON who has identified a desire for intersectional pollinator education delivered by folks whom their students can identify with. This project has grown out of our understanding that:

  • Students deserve to see environmental leaders, local advocates, and role models who look like them.
  • Youth deserve to have a meaningful relationship with nature.
  • Equity-deserving communities contribute the least to the climate crisis yet experience the greatest impacts.
  • Equity-deserving communities have been systemically and socially excluded from the environmental sector.

    Job Purpose:

    1. To provide the space and capacity for two environmental educators from equity-deserving communities to contribute to climate justice work on their own terms, serve as role models, and engage directly with youth.
    2. To empower students with the tools, knowledge, and safe space needed to develop a love for and relationship with Mother Nature and to understand that everything is connected.

    Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Program development
  • Create 10 lesson plans on the topic of pollinators which centers cultural teachings, perspectives, and understandings from your own background.
  • Activities may include: story times, art projects, songs, dance, planting seeds, science experiments, outdoor observations, games, and more!
  • Skills required: teamwork, creativity, time management, organization, strong cultural connections, tech literacy (Gmail, PowerPoint, etc.), communication, and the ability to take initiative.

    Program delivery
The 10 lesson plans will be delivered at the same elementary school in Brampton by the two Bee Ambassadors with the support of the classroom teacher.
  • Skills required: class management, time management, public speaking, problem solving, adaptability, patience, and communication.
  • Transportation: Bee Ambassadors must be able to transport themselves to and from the elementary school via car or public transport. If this is a barrier for you but you are a perfect fit otherwise, we can explore possible transport arrangements!
Skills and Experience Required

There are no absolute prerequisites for this position. We encourage everyone who thinks they may be a good fit to apply! Preference, however, will be given to candidates who have:
1. An educational background in environmental sciences (non-mainstream forms of education are welcomed!)
2. 2+ experience working with groups of 15+ youth aged 6-12
