The following is a policy statement for all Autism and Behavioural Science students on a placement where they are being asked to implement a procedure using intrusive intervention(s) or where the Autism and Behavioural Science student is considering recommending an intrusive procedure.
An intrusive procedure is defined as any procedure that constrains (e.g., time out, restraint) or controls (e.g., physical prompts, overcorrection) an individual’s movements or inflicts discomfort or pain (e.g., reprimands, noxious stimuli).
Scenario #1: A field placement site has an existing approved program(s) using intrusive procedures.
- There must be written consent for such procedures on file with the field placement site that the student can assess as needed.
- The intervention must include a positive behavioural support system design to develop or increase the frequency of appropriate behaviour.
- The student must be trained by the staff at the field placement site in these procedures and a written record of the times and the types of the procedures taught must be maintained. The student must have a copy of this information.
- The FPS must be informed by the student of the above training before implementation.
- Individual confidentiality can and will be respected.
- ALL incidents involving any procedures used to retrain an individual must be recorded as a critical incident and these files must be kept by the field placement site and made available to the student and FPS on an as needed basis.
- Data must be charted / graphed daily and reviewed weekly by the field placement site personnel responsible for the program, including the Autism and Behavioural Science student.
Scenario #2: A field placement site does NOT have an existing approved policy for the use of intrusive procedures.
- The use of intrusive intervention(s) is not permitted.
