Game Design Activity Instructions
Applicants of Mohawk College’s Game Design program are tasked with completing a game design activity as part of the admissions process. Make sure to answer and complete all sections. We aim to assess your abilities to communicate, think, and reflect through this activity.
Your tasks are to:
- Play the assigned game.
- Modify one rule of the assigned game.
- Observe how others play your modification.
- Reflect upon your observations.
- Submit your worksheet by submitting this form.
Game, Description, and Rules
Assigned Game
- Game name: Pig's Tail
- Also known as: Pig Tail, Buta no Shippo
Required Play Materials
- One standard 52-card deck (no Jokers).
Rules
Objective: Finish with the fewest possible cards.
Players: 2-4 players.
Setup
- Shuffle one standard 52-card deck.
- In the centre of the play area, fan out the deck of cards face-down in a large C shape (pig's tail).
- Select someone to be the active player (starting player).
Possible Actions
The active player can do any one of the following actions on their turn.
- The active player picks any one face-down card, flips the card face-up, and places it in the centre of the play area on top of the previous card (if present).
- The active player picks any one of their held cards and places it face-up in the centre of the play area on top of the previous card (if present).
Play
- The active player chooses one action to perform. See Possible Actions.
- If the card placed in the centre pile is the same suit (club, diamond, heart, spade) as the previously placed card, that players must take all cards from the centre pile.
- If face-down cards remain, move to the next player in clockwise order. The next player starts with instruction #1 of Play (and is now the active player).
- If no face-down cards remain, all players count their card piles. The player with the lowest card count is the winner.
