What is a Student Sustainability Organizer?

A Student Sustainability Organizer is a student at Mohawk College who is a member of the Responsible Futures Planning Team. The Responsible Futures Planning Team oversees the progress of the Responsible Futures Program.

What is Responsible Futures?

Mohawk College is entering its second year as part of the Responsible Futures program. Responsible Futures is a program where “universities and colleges are supported to make transformative changes to their teaching and learning, strategies, and policies in partnership with their students”. It works to integrate sustainability and climate justice into aspects of the institution.

As part of the Responsible Futures Planning Team, you will help advance topics, alongside the College and MSA, which ultimately contribute to a more wholistically sustainable institution.

What will you do as a Student Sustainability Organizer?

  • Attend monthly meetings with a variety of sustainability-related topics
  • Contribute to discussions about sustainability college-wide
  • Provide recommendations to advance sustainable development criteria

  • Receive training, learning, and resume building opportunities

  • Participate in reflections on successes and steps for improvement

  • Plan and execute events/campaigns related to Responsible Futures and Sustainability Awareness

  • Liaise on behalf of the concerns of students in regards to sustainability in the student experience

  • Foster a respectful environment that engages the College community in creating a culture that embodies decolonization & decarbonization

    • Be prepared to learn as well as share knowledge

  • Informally vote on ideas and establish priorities

Example of a Responsible Futures Planning Team Meeting:

You arrive to the boardroom or online and participate in an icebreaker. Then, one of the RF topics is presented to you: it declares that an institution should have substantial grassroots sustainability opportunities for students. Staff members share existing opportunities and then ask the following sample questions:

  1. What opportunities do not exist, but should exist?
  2. There is not capacity for both, so should we prioritize on campus sustainability efforts or off-campus sustainability efforts?
  3. What challenges exist to having students be involved with sustainability efforts, especially if they are at campuses other than Fennell?
  4. Are there any other recommendations?

Action: Staff may then use these recommendations immediately, save them for later consideration, or ask you to help organize an activity that builds upon and promotes these recommendations

Example of a Responsible Futures Activity:

In 2024, Student Sustainability Organizers helped review and promote a student survey which was administered to 2095 students. This allowed the team to capture student attitudes towards sustainability and then create calls to action with the data to back it up.
