Indigenous Education Council Guiding Statement

The Indigenous Education Council of Mohawk College is a partnership between Mohawk College and Indigenous communities. The Indigenous Education Council establishes and maintains linkages which promote the sharing of community knowledge, values and cultural and linguistic priorities set out by the Indigenous Education Council while respecting the strategic priorities of Mohawk College. By recognizing the unique and diverse perspectives of Indigenous learners, and building them into this guiding statement, the Indigenous Education Council of Mohawk College seeks to balance positive social, cultural, and academic outcomes with sustainable results in the labour market.

Mission

The Indigenous Education Council is a circle of Leaders, Allies and Advocates who influence decision-making at Mohawk College by ensuring the voices of Indigenous Communities and Learners are recognized.

IEC Key Functions

The IEC will make recommendations and provide strategic guidance on the following initiatives:

1. Needs identification data for Indigenous learners.
2. Indigenous student services offered by Mohawk College.
3. Indigenous -specific academic programs and courses offered by Mohawk College or in partnership with Indigenous educational institutions.
4. Recruitment of Indigenous faculty and staff for Mohawk College.
5. Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for all Indigenous programs at Mohawk College.
6. Mohawk College’s Indigenous Student Recruitment Strategy.
7. On-going liaison with Mohawk College through staff and the Board of Governors.
8. The Indigenous Education and Student Services Strategic Plan
9. Mohawk College’s Strategic Plan.
10. National and Provincial trends in Indigenous Post-Secondary Education.
11. Financial matters related to Indigenous specific funding received by Mohawk College.
12. Multi-year Financial Plan to ensure continued financial support for Indigenous programs and services at Mohawk College.
13. Quarterly report to the Board of Governors pertaining to the Aboriginal Education Council.
14. Potential partnership development, joint planning and collaboration in program and service development and delivery (i.e. articulation agreements) between Mohawk College and First Nations communities, Indigenous organizations and other key stakeholders.
