2018 theme: The Shape of Our World
Students often ask the question "When am I going to need this?” when they study mathematics. Our Mohawk Math Engineering Competition is trying to answer that question.
This competition will introduce students to different applications of mathematics in engineering areas and encourage them to consider future careers in engineering technology.

When asked: What impact did this competition have on you? |
I learned that there are many things that math can teach me besides numbers. There are so many different fields that I could go into. From competing with other schools, I learned that there are many other people who share the same goals that I do. After winning best individual score for my grade (grade 12), I felt that I could really do something good with my math skills. To pursue a career that includes being good in this subject. It made me feel I can have a name for myself (or something other than that). - Abid Bashizadah, student
Gave me confidence and I actually enjoyed it even though I don't normally find math enjoyable. - McKenna G, student.
This competition made me realize the importance of providing many varied rich learning tasks for students. Having an opportunity to look at the written test has encouraged me to develop tasks that require deeper thinking and a higher level of problem solving. I'm sure for students, there must've been a sense of pride in just being chosen to represent their school, even if they didn't place in the competition. I know that for my students, who did do well, they have developed a confidence in their abilities that they didn't have before. They called themselves "smart in math" for perhaps the first time in their lives. - Patricia Misner, teacher.
This was a huge boost to our son's confidence and we hope he can return on behalf of his school next year! It was fantastic to see kids in the Applied stream be recognized and for them to see that they can do well in areas like math! - Stephanie Stevenson, parent.
One of my Grade 11 students who competed could not believe that I choose her to represent our school. She had the perception that she was not good at math and was completing her third and final math course to graduate. She actually placed in the math competition, which was a huge shock to her! She changed her schedule for next year to include math! Her success challenged her perception of her abilities! - Roger Logan, teacher. |
