What you'll learn
- Set up and operate trade machinery such as brake presses, shears, plasma cutters, oxy-fuel cutting torches, grinders and drills to bend, punch, cut and form metal components.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and schematics.
- Perform calculations and apply shop formulas and other mathematical methods to develop patterns and lay out structural steel.
- Plan the sequence of tasks and decide how to cut steel most efficiently.
- Assemble and fit metal sections and plates together to form subunits or complete units used in the assembly process.
- Fasten components together using tack welding, bolting and riveting.
- Move completed assemblies safely by using material handling, rigging, hoisting and lifting equipment.
