Dr. Mini Thomas is a full-time professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at Mohawk College. With a strong technical foundation in software engineering, artificial intelligence, and embedded systems, she develops and teaches courses across Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Digital Health programs. She also serves as the Program Coordinator for the Digital Health Graduate Certificate and the Faculty Lead for International Students in the School of Engineering. Additionally, she is an active researcher with MEDIC, IDEAWORKS and a member of the Research Ethics Board at Mohawk College.
With over 25 years of experience in academia and industry, spanning Canada and international institutions, Dr. Thomas has held diverse roles in teaching, research, and industry collaboration. Prior to Mohawk College, she was a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering Department at Qatar University, where she served as an Instructor, Program Schedule Coordinator, and Focal Academic Advisor. Her industry experience includes roles as a Technical Lead in software and embedded systems, contributing to cutting-edge research and product development.
Dr. Thomas has extensive expertise in applied research, particularly in AI-driven software systems, machine learning for healthcare, signal processing, embedded IoT systems, and industrial automation. She has led multiple research and development projects in collaboration with industrial partners, contributing to advancements in trustworthy AI models, healthcare technology, and IIoT 4.0 applications. She has also published extensively in international journals and conferences and actively mentors students in capstone projects, software development, and applied AI innovations.
Dr. Thomas holds a Ph.D. in Software Engineering from McMaster University, specializing in data-driven AI model for trust quantification in wearable medical devices. She also earned a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) certified by PEO and APEGA. She is a FANUC Robotics Certified Instructor at Mohawk College and a Certified Enterprise Design Thinking (Train the Trainer) Instructor through IBM.
Passionate about engineering education, software innovation, and student mentorship, Dr. Thomas believes in bridging theory with real-world applications to create impactful learning experiences. She is guided by the principle: "By learning, you will teach; by teaching, you will learn."
