When Mike, a second-year student in the Business (General) program at Mohawk College, needed to quickly make a career change in his life, he knew he needed to find a program that allowed him to get back to work as quickly as possible. “In the area that I’m living there aren't really many options for work and moving wasn't an option for me either. I worked in mining, I worked in construction, and in manufacturing, and I just felt that I needed a change,” says Mike.
Fortunately for him, the January intake for the Business (General) program offered exactly what he needed. “I chose the January start because the need for change was sudden and quite urgent, so I wanted to get into the program as soon as possible,” says Mike. “I entered in January, and I wanted to get it done with as little time lapse as possible between exiting the workforce and reentry into a career. I just wanted to plow right through and get it get it done that way, and that’s what the January start offers.”
Currently in his second year, Mike enrolled in the online learning version of the program in order to stay close to his family. “The online learning Program gave me the flexibility I needed to handle family and household obligations,” says Mike. “I have a wife and two young children at home, so it really gave me more free time, more flexibility in my schedule. That was key.”
Mike recommends considering a January intake to anyone looking for a more streamlined, uninterrupted learning experience. “There are a lot of a lot of benefits, especially for myself as a mature student,” says Mike. “Typically, with the January start, you find a lot more mature students entering in January because a lot of the high school students get out of their summer break in September, and they enter at that time. You end up with a group of students in the January intake that are in the same demographic or similar demographic, maybe have similar life experience, have been in the workforce.”
“Another good thing about the January start is the cumulative knowledge that you get is all fresh in your mind,” says Mike. “When you don't have that summer break, you don't forget things in the program.”
Those looking to challenge themselves will find a home in the Business program, according to Mike.
“Anybody who is seeking a meaningful challenge and a good way to develop yourself personally and professionally, the Business program is definitely right for you.”
