Using AI Safely and Ethically to Build Your Resume: Do’s and Don’ts

In today’s tech-savvy world, increasing AI dependency has become a new norm across every field and industry. Undoubtedly, company recruiters incorporate AI in their hiring processes - with 55% of the AI use being used specifically for candidate matching in North America in 2024 (Statista, 2025). While AI tools streamline and optimize job search process, they also pose risks of privacy concerns, copyright issues and cybersecurity threats. 

Here are general Do’s and Don’ts for your safe and ethical AI-powered resume building.

Do’s: 

  • Use verified and trusted AI tools and sites. Check for secure (HTTPS) connection or use Google’s transparency report site to help you stay on safe websites. 
  • Limit sharing personal information. For example, do not use your full address on your resume, mention only your city instead.
  • Review and adjust your permission and privacy settings before use. For instance, accept only essential cookies and allow permissions to access microphone and cameras only when required.
  • Disable data-saving features and turn off the chat saving function.
  • Prompt AI to assess your skills and experience and align them with your target job role.
  • Prompt AI to identify keywords and suggest ways to match the language of your resume to the job posting.
  • Use AI to assist you to optimize sentence structure, flow and layout while keeping your personal voice.
  • Edit the AI generated language.  Make sure the writing sounds like you.  Do not leave words you do not understand in your resume.
  • Whenever you can - ask a trusted source or experienced professional to review your resume before you submit it for a job.

Don’ts

  • Don’t download apps or click links that appear to be suspicious. It will prevent your exposure to malware, scams, or data breaches.
  • Never share sensitive details such as full name, full address, phone number, SIN (Social Identification Number) or financial information into AI tools.
  • Don’t use AI to write your resume completely as it sounds robotic and generic.
  • Don’t rely on AI-generated information. Research using trusted and reputed websites to gather accurate information.
  • Don’t copy and paste AI-generated content for it may lead to plagiarism.

AI is a powerful tool to guide you and optimize your job search experience. However, don’t use it as a replacement for your thoughts. Learn how to prompt AI wisely to make the most of it. Lastly, use AI ethically and stay safe from potential risks.
