Mature Students

- There is an increasing trend of mature students seeking to further their education, pursue new career paths, or acquire skills for a second career
- Mature students enrich the learning environment, offering diverse perspectives and experiences that benefit the entire college community
- Nearly 1/3 of Mohawk students are aged 23 or older, with learners from all generations represented
Who are Mature Students?
A person who:
- Is at least 19 years of age or older on or before the start of their program
- Does not have a high school diploma or equivalent (such as a GED or CAEC)
- Has been out of formal education for an extended period
As a mature student, you are eligible to apply to many of our programs even if you have not completed high school. However, mature students are still required to meet all program-specific admission requirements, such as prerequisites in English, math, and/or science. Some programs are competitive and may have extra requirements.
If you do not currently meet these requirements, don’t worry! Mature students have access to alternative pathways to fulfill them, including:
- Pre-Admission Testing (available for English, Language and/or Math)
High school credits through your local boards of education.
If you live in Hamilton, this includes:
- St. Charles Adult & Continuing Education (HWCDSB)
- High school credits through TVO ILC
- Mohawk College Continuing Education courses
- English proficiency testing (for ESL Applicants)
- Applying with Courses in Progress
International Credential Assessment
- WES
- ICAS
- Preparatory programs: Tuition-based programs designed to help you meet specific program prerequisites. (Example: Pre-Health or General Arts and Science)
Degree Programs
Mature students cannot complete Pre-Admission Testing to become eligible for Mohawk College Degree programs. Applicants must complete the program-specific pre-requisites before applying to a degree program in order to satisfy eligibility
