PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) celebrates 10 years of providing Supplemental Instruction at Mohawk College.
We are always looking to partner to improve our impact and services.
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is global post-secondary academic support. As a non-remedial approach to learning, SI supports students toward academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.”
SI consists of regularly scheduled, voluntary, out-of-class group study sessions driven by students’ needs.
PASS at Mohawk
Peer Assisted Study Sessions began in 2013 by supporting two high-risk courses. Over the past decade, in partnership with faculty, PASS has supported 11 different high-risk courses, employed 287 student leaders, and reached 22000 students.
PASS Success Data
On average, students that attend PASS sessions earn 13% points higher on their final grades compared to non-participants.
PASS attendees are also 20% more likely to remain enrolled in their course compared to non-participants.
SI Techniques
Supplemental Instruction (SI) programs, like PASS, are built from a facilitation model rather than instruction. The use of three major strategies – redirection, wait-time, and checking for understanding – plus additional strategies, help sessions remain student-centred.
