How to report changes to OSAP application information

Once you submit your online OSAP application, you can no longer edit it.

If, however, circumstances in your life change before or during your study period like your income, marital status, family size, access to transportation, etc., you must notify the Financial Assistance department to update your OSAP application. Please review the list of changes below for more information and the next steps to update your OSAP.

Changes can impact your assessment

Your OSAP entitlement is based on the number of course hours you are enrolled in. If you drop or change courses after you apply, it could affect your OSAP entitlement and may cause delays in receiving your funding.

When applying for OSAP you provide personal and financial information that is used to determine your eligibility and funding entitlement. If this information changes during the academic session in which you receive OSAP assistance, then you are responsible for notifying Financial Assistance so that we can update the information on your OSAP record. These changes may increase, decrease, or not affect your funding entitlement.

Complete the appropriate form(s) below:

  • You must sign and date all forms and any supporting documentation.
  • Upload them directly to your online OSAP account

If the change(s) impacts your entitlement, then you will be notified by the Ministry. You can also check your status by logging into the OSAP website to see if the change has been completed.

Changes to Social Insurance Number (SIN)

If you have been issued a new Social insurance Number (SIN), you will need to register for a new OSAP account with your new SIN. You will then re-apply for OSAP funding for your desired semester through your new OSAP account.

After you have registered your new OSAP account, you must upload a copy of your old SIN confirmation and new SIN confirmation document via your new OSAP application online. There is an optional upload button which can be found in the required documentation section of your OSAP application that can be used to submit confirmation of your old and new SIN. Please contact us once these documents have been uploaded and we will submit a request to the Ministry to merge your OSAP profiles.

To ensure that your prior term loan repayment is placed on hold and interest-free whilst enrolled in full-time studies, please submit a continuation of interest-free status application via your old OSAP. An interest-free status application can be submitted by following the steps below:

  • Log into your old OSAP account
  • Select "apply for continuation of interest-free status"
  • Complete and submit your interest-free status application

If you created your OSAP account with the incorrect Social Insurance Number (SIN), you will need to create a new OSAP account using your correct SIN. Once your new OSAP account is created with the correct SIN, please contact us and we will submit a request to the Ministry to have the account with the incorrect SIN deleted.

Interaction with other forms of Government Support (ODSP/OW)

Before you begin your studies, you need to:

  • report the amount of social assistance you receive on your OSAP application
  • let your caseworker know how much OSAP you receive

If you are in receipt of ODSP support, or if your spouse or common-law partner receives ODSP support, OSAP will cover only your direct educational costs, including tuition, compulsory fees, books, supplies, equipment and local travel costs. This calculation will be done automatically when you apply for OSAP. You can continue to get ODSP funding to help with living costs while receiving OSAP.

If you get financial support through the Ontario Works program, you need to apply for OSAP to help cover both your education and living costs.

If you are receiving EI, Better Jobs Ontario, or CPP support, you will need to declare it as income on your OSAP application. OSAP can act as a “top-up” in these cases if the OSAP calculation deems that more support is required.
