Background
In Canada, animals used in research and teaching must be cared for and maintained in accordance with applicable laws, and requirements outlined by The Canadian Council on Animal Care and the Tri-Council Memorandum of Understanding. This policy has been developed to comply with eligibility requirements of federal funding agencies – NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC - concerning the ethical use of animals in research.
Definitions
“Animal” refers to any living non-human vertebrate and any living invertebrate of the class cephalopoda, including free-living and reproducing larval forms used for research, teaching, breeding, or testing purposes.
Purpose
This policy outlines the College’s official position on the ethical use of animals in research.
Scope
This policy applies to all College research and teaching activities.
Policy Statements
- Although Mohawk College staff have never engaged in college-sanctioned teaching or research involving animals, the College subscribes in principle to the humane treatment of all animals used in research, instruction and testing, as outlined in the guidelines and policies of the Canadian Council on Animal Care.
- Mohawk College does not currently intend to sanction any future educational or research activities that would involve the use of animals.
Monitoring
The Vice President – Technology, Apprenticeship & Corporate Training is responsible for monitoring this policy according to the schedule established by the Director, Corporate Services or more frequently as determined by feedback from members of the college community.
