Holly Frank

In the General Arts & Science program, I learned so much of the world and history. By the time I completed the program the world made a lot more sense to me. Being an Indigenous student and learning about the history of western civilization helped me to understand the importance of where we are today. There was not one course I did not like, all courses tied into my world knowledge, and each subject was valuable to understanding life.

Based on my personal experience, this program allowed me to improve my English skills; in particular, my writing skills. The General Arts & Science (GAS) program helped me to enhance my writing while utilizing creative thinking. Taking the English as a Second Language (ESL) course alone cannot advance students who want to improve their English. As many know, studying at universities students are often expected to have high-level writing skills and create research papers containing perfect bibliographies or references. Mohawk’s GAS program covers all of these things, preparing students for their future studies.

The General Arts and Science Diploma (University Transfer) Program has transformed my life, providing invaluable academic and employable skills like effective communication, critical thinking, and sociocultural awareness. By immersing myself in diverse courses across multiple disciplines, I've developed a profound understanding of global and social issues, enhancing my ability to evaluate and comprehend interdisciplinary connections critically. This program has equipped me for future career paths and ignited a passion for continuous learning, nurturing my educational aspirations and fostering a lifelong journey of personal and intellectual growth.

After graduating from high school, I was unsure what I wanted to do for post-secondary, but knew that I wanted to further my education. I think that the GAS program was the perfect fit - it gave me an idea of what post-secondary programming was all about and introduced me to many different areas of interest. If it wasn't for GAS program I wouldn't have been able to write a proper paper and I definitely would not have been ready for university! I developed a love affair with Mohawk College - the people, the places, all the things! 16 years later I found myself a fulltime role at Fennell Campus and I absolutely wouldn't change a thing!

Zoya, 2018

The GAS program is a great way to acclimatize oneself to academia. Any new students will benefit from the exposure to multiple fields in the humanities and soft sciences. It helped me build academic confidence in my writing and study skills, and it served as the starting-point for my academic journey to help bridge the gap between secondary school and university. GAS was a great place to make friends, and it gave me opportunities for meaningful interaction with faculty.
